O papa Francisco, em mais um passo para ampliar as funções das mulheres na Igreja Católica Romana, alterou regras nesta segunda-feira (11) para permitir formalmente que elas atuem como leitoras em liturgias, distribuidoras de comunhão e prestem serviços no altar.

Em decreto, o papa formalizou o que já vinha acontecendo em muitos países desenvolvidos há anos. Mas, ao introduzir a mudança no Código de Direito Canônico, será impossível para os bispos conservadores impedir que as mulheres em suas dioceses tenham essas funções.

O Vaticano enfatizou, no entanto, que essas funções são "essencialmente distintas do sacerdócio ordenado", o que significa que não devem ser vistas como um precursor automático para que mulheres possam um dia serem ordenadas no sacerdócio.

"O pontífice, portanto, estabeleceu que as mulheres podem ter acesso a essas práticas e que podem ter funções litúrgicas institucionais", disse o Vaticano em nota explicativa.

No decreto, denominado Spiritus Domini, Francisco disse que tomou a decisão após reflexão teológica.

Ele afirmou que muitos bispos de todo o mundo disseram que a mudança era necessária para responder às "necessidades dos tempos".
